Ship Bottom


The town of Ship Bottom, NJ has an unusual history as to how the town came upon its name. According to legend in 1817 the town got its name from a heroic captain who put his life on the line to save a woman who was caught beneath a sinking ship. Although this story has never been proven to be true many locals believe that this event may have happened.

Ship Bottom is the passage way into Long Beach Island and is one of the oldest towns established on the island.

Their beautiful white sandy beaches are something of themselves to behold. The beaches are protected by lifeguards to ensure you and your family’s safety. Some of the local’s favorite activities on the beach include sunbathing, swimming, surfing, sailing, snorkeling, and volleyball. While on the beach you must be wearing a beach badge in plain sight. You can purchase the beach badges by the day, week, or season. There are no boardwalks to distract you from that wonderful experience of being at one with your surroundings. Beach Arlington Park and Bay Beach also offers a playground for the kids to play on and a pavilion for picnics. This town is so small that you could literally walk from the beach of the Atlantic Ocean to the beach of the Bay Beach in a short period of time.

There are so many attractions in Ship Bottom that it would be hard to partake in all of them in one weekend visit. For a few examples you can visit the Allen House that is a historical house that once was a tavern in the late 1700’s. You can also go on a historical tour of Christ Church and marvel at its historical structure.
