Sea Girt

The history of Sea Girt, NJ can be traced back to 1866 when the Sea Girt area and surrounding area’s were primarily farm land. However before it ever acquired its present name it was a popular place for the Lenni Lenape Indians who would come to the area yearly for baths and baked clam feasts.

After Jersey was adopted into the colony, eastern settlers would also travel great distances to gather in the same spot as the Lenni Lenape Indians once did. In 1917 the Sea Girt was no longer considered part of Wall Township and became a borough.

This was known as the “Big Sea Day” and they would reunite with old friends and have friendly activities throughout the entire day.

The Sea Girt Lighthouse was erected in 1895 and is still standing today. Lighthouse tours are given on most every Sunday through November 21st except on holiday weekends. It’s located on Beacon Blvd and stands 60 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Today the light house is only used for selective community activities.

Sea Girt has a white sandy beach that is one mile long and an old fashion boardwalk that adds to the already breathtaking surroundings. Here you can enjoy all kinds of beach activities such as sunbathing, swimming, fishing, surfing, snorkeling, boating or sailing. You must purchase a beach badge to wear from Memorial Day to Labor Day while at the beach. You can buy daily or seasonal badges. Another “fun in the sun” activity you might want to try is charting a boat to do some deep sea fishing or just to explore the wide open space of the deep blue sea.

A local restaurant that is widely known within the area is Scarborough Fair. Here they specialize in “original interpretations of international and American cuisine.” They have created a mythical atmosphere with multilevel seating and outdoor patios. This place is ideal if you are on a romantic getaway and are looking for privacy. They also aim to please so if you have special dietary needs let them know, and will accommodate you in any way they can.
The Beacon House is a local Bed & Breakfast that is located in Sea Girt, which offers a wide variety of amenities and accommodations. Their suites include queen size beds, private baths, fireplace and an ocean view Jacuzzi. This Victorian style house dates back to 1879 and has a wrap around porch which adds to the charm of this quaint B&B.
