Point Pleasant Beach
| Point Pleasant Beach was a land that was originally inhabited by the Leni Lanape Indians for several hundred years before the “white man” discovered it. In 1870 a man by the name of Captain John Arnold realized its potential as a resort community and started the construction a roadway to the ocean that is now known as Arnold Avenue. | |
| In 1875 he was responsible for establishing the town’s first bridge over the Manasquan River to Brielle and some years latter he persuaded the Central Jersey Railroad to come through Point Pleasant Beach.
In 1877 The Point Pleasant Land Company bought out local farms and began construction on The Resort House. The luxurious four stories Resort House with 200 guest rooms was the largest building in town and attracted many tourists. After this resort was in full swing several other grand hotels were built in this area. None of the original hotels are still standing; they have either been burnt down or disassembled for scrap wood during WWII. The original board walk was even destroyed two years after being built due to substandard construction it was an easy target for the ocean to wash away.
