Cape May


Cape May, NJ is located on the eastern part of the state and is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The history of this town is quit fascinating and dates back for many years. This town was named by a Dutch man in 1623, exploring the coast along Cape May and never actually leaving his ship. Skipping along several hundred years past the purchase of this land from the Leni Lenape Indians this town suffered several hardships.
In 1878 A major fires caused eruptible damages that burnt down 40 acres of property that took more than 11 hours to extinguish. Although no lives were lost or any one was severely wounded it devastated the town just the same. This would be the first of two major firs that nearly destroyed Cape May. The first fire was not as furiousness as the second that destroyed hundreds of hotels and personal property.

The beautiful sandy white beaches in Cape May is the perfect spot for family fun, sunbathing, building sandcastles, watch dolphins, or just spending the day site seeing. If beach activities are not what you want, then try charting a boat from the local marina to do some deep sea fishing. You can also go to Point May which is less than 12 miles away and see the famous concrete ship called the Atlantus that has been sinking for over 50 years.

Cape May is a town where you can enjoy a friendly and courteous atmosphere and take in some historic scenery. You can take many tours of Victorian homes which they open to the public to share some of their history and also you can stay the night in some because they have been converted over to B&B’s.

If you are interested in the history of this town you can also visit the Cape May County Historical Museum located at 504 Route 9 North. In the last 26 years this town has worked hard to collect and display some of Cap May’s legendary history.

  4. Winter – West Cape May Christmas Parade – Candlelight House Tours – Grand Tour & Tea.

Directions: Take NJ-109 South (this will become Lafayette ST/ CR-633). You will then need to make a left onto Sidney Ave. Then make a right onto Washington ST. Then another left onto East St and right onto Massachusetts Ave. One more left onto Reading Ave and this will end in Cap May, NJ.
