Barnegat Light, NJ was first discovered in 1609 by Henry Hudson and was deeded by the English in 1692. Several settlers such as fishermen and American Indians populated this area for centuries before it was made into a resort town. Around the late 1800’s a company was formed to bring improvements to this town and form it into a beach side resort community that would draw in tourists.
Also in the mid to late 1800’s Barnegat Light was home to the second tallest lighthouse in the U.S., named Barnegat Lighthouse.
One of Barnegat Light’s most charming qualities is that the population of this town is 730 full time residents who work hard to preserve their heritage and maintain a popular resort destination. Several people have a permanent vacation home in this town which brings the summer population up to 1,100 residents. At the beach in Barnegat Light, you are required to purchase a beach badge if you are over the age of 12. You can buy them by the day, week, or season.
This area is well-known for their quality of fishing and is the lively hood of some of the town’s residents. In the area are marinas where you can rent a boat from to enjoy some deep sea fishing. The local marinas can also guide you in the right area to some of the best fishing spots.
The Barnegat Light Historical Society Museum is a must see, while you are in this area. It is housed in the original school house where the youngsters of Barnegat Light first received their elementary education. The historical society has maintained this museum to a tee and it is said to look exactly as it did when school was still in session here. Here you can also see the Fresnal Lens that was used in the Barnegat Lighthouse during its commission. Directions: On NJ-72 East exit at exit 63. Turn left onto Long Beach BLVD/CR-607. Keep left at the fork to go on Long Beach BLVD/CR-607. This will turn into Central Ave. Turn slightly left onto Broadway and follow it into Barnegat Light, NJ.
