Avon by the Sea


Avon-by-the-Sea was established in 1900. This town was originally purchased by a man named Edward Batchelor who was a wealthy tobacco manufacturer from Philadelphia. He initially had bought the property to be the future location of his next tobacco plant and named the land “Key East”. However, under the advice of his surveyor and engineer that were hired to develop his land, he decided to develop this real estate into a future resort town.

After the town became Avon-by-the-Sea they added a boardwalk and organized fire companies. In 1908 they built a school house and it is still in use today.

Bounded by three bodies of water Avon-by-the-Sea is a great place to vacation. On the north end of the town is Sylvan Lake, which is famous being home for swans. On the south is the Shark River where they you can watch the boats coming or going under the drawbridges. On the east is the Atlantic Ocean and beaches.

The white sandy beaches’ is responsible for drawing in the largest portion of tourists. Here you can enjoy a full day of outdoor sunny activities in the summer months. Avon-by-the-Sea’s board walk is lined with pavilions, benches, and Victorian lamps to create a relaxing atmosphere. They have all year round activities like scuba diving, boating, or fishing that many visitors enjoy.

One restaurant in Avon-by-the-Sea is The Avon-by-the-Sea Pavilion. This beachfront restaurant is a classy, but casual dressing place to eat. Here they serve all gourmet meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They specialize in fresh seafood or a wide selection of pasta.
If that’s not the kind of restaurant you’re looking for then check out Schneider’s Sells Seafood by the Seashore. Here they are known for their German-Austrian-Hungarian dishes, but they aim to please by serving steaks, Italian, American and deli meals as well. Their advertisement states that they boil, fry, grill, or sauté and have been doing so for over 37 years. As if this isn’t enough they also advertise that “You may BYOB”!

Nightly accommodations in the area are plentiful with great amenities like the Avon-by-the-Sea B&B. Here they have queen-sized featherbeds, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and 2 private balconies that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Another place to look into is the Nantucket B&B. Here they have large rooms with king size canopied featherbeds, corner fireplaces and an Ocean view. The rooms are done in blue and burgundy and antique oriental carpet.
