Atlantic City
| Atlantic City is a popular casino resort town on the coast of New Jersey. The first known settler in this area, other than the Lenni-Lenape Indians, was a man named Jeremiah Leeds. He built the first home and farm here and worked it until he passed away in 1837. The following year his serving wife built a tavern called Mille’s Boarding House making it the first established business in Atlantic City. | |
| Several members of Jeremiah Leeds’s family became productive members of society in this young town and helped to form it into a functioning city. It wasn’t until 1854 that the first train rolled into town bringing the first vacationers. After the word got out about this small seaside town travelers from around the world started pouring in by train and by sea. In 1870 the first road that took 17 years to build was finished. It connect Atlantic City to the mainland this made it more convenient for tourists to be able to visit the island at a cheaper coast. By this time Atlantic City was well on its way to being a popular resort destination. One of the most attractive features of Atlantic City is their board walk that stretches out for 6 miles and is 60 feet long. While strolling down this enormous boardwalk you will notice that all the shops and restaurants are on one side while the amusement piers are on the opposite side. This is a city law that has been in affect ever since the first boardwalk was built. FYI…If you haven’t already heard this is the setting for the famous board game Monopoly crated by Charles Darrow. During the summer the beaches in Atlantic City are thriving with activities for the entire family. If you don’t feel like sunbathing or swimming you can go surfing or snorkeling. They also have nearby marinas that rent out water crafts like sail boats, fishing boats, and jet skies. On the Jersey Shore you will also find a wide variety of restaurants, activities and entertainment that is sure to please just about everyone. Of course the biggest attraction to Atlantic City is the casinos, casinos and more casinos that are practically making this town burst at all seams. Directions: On Garden state PKWY express LN Sough you will need to exit at 117-105/Asbury Park/South Jersey. Garden State PKWY Express LN S will turn into Garden State PKWY S. From here you will merge onto Atlantic City EXPY E and exit at exit 38 towards Atlantic City. Atlantic City EXPY E will turn into Christopher Columbus Blvd. Turn left onto Atlantic Ave and this will end in Atlantic City, NJ. |
